The Animal Protectors

Working to reduce the numbers of stray dogs and cats

Life on the streets can be a dangerous, frightening experience for abandoned dogs and cats. They are vulnerable to starvation, disease, exploitation and abuse. The animals who are rescued by the team in Varadero are sometimes adopted locally but the majority need to find a place of shelter where they can be cared for. There is a dedicated group of Animal Protectors who open their homes and their hearts to these vulnerable animals taking care of them until they can be rehomed.

This is Karelia she is an Animal Protector. She has picked up from the streets 6 dogs and 4 cats and assists Yohanky with at least 5 other stray animals around her home and neighbourhood. Feeding the animals of course is a great challenge but Yohanky is able to help with this by providing the means for Karelia to buy food for the rescued strays.

Karelia has recently taken into her home a very sick and extremely dehydrated dog which was rescued from the streets by the team. Yohanky was able to treat to the dog for parasites and give him a multivitamin injection and one for anaemia. Chico (below) is now recovered and will be adopted to Canada.

Meet Anita she lives in Cardenas about 19 km from Varadero, she has a heart for abandoned animals and has cared for cats all her life. Despite having few resources she shares her house with a street dog and 25 rescued cats! We need homes for these cats, if you can help, please contact us.

With gifts from abroad Yohanky has been able to sterilise the cats and continues to offer veterinary care to Anita's animals.
With help from you, the supporters, Yohanky has been able to provide some medications and treatments for the cats. The availability of cat treatments is not good in particular it is very difficult to get hold of the treatment for cryptococcocis, a debilitating yeast fungal infection. If anyone can help with obtaining the treatment for this infection please let us know. Providing food daily for the cats is challenging but Yohanky is able to give some financial support to help with this. If you are thinking of visiting Cuba please consider carrying some cat food, flea, tick and worm treatments in your luggage to help Anita care for her rescues.
Thank you.
Chicken and fish only please no beef or pork products allowed in Cuba.
